Common Goethe exam mistakes from A1 to B1

The errors that keep showing up: word order, false friends, and time management — and what to drill instead of highlighting.

German-shaped English

aktuell is not *actually* (eigentlich). bekommen is not *become* (werden). Gift is poison. These are not trivia; they sit in distractors because they look kind. If a multiple-choice option feels like the English word, pause.

Word order under stress

Main clause: conjugated verb in second position. Weil-clause: verb at the end. People who 'know the rule' still write weil ich wohne in Berlin once the clock is running. That is a drill problem, not an intelligence problem.

Yes/no questions put the verb first: Wohnen Sie in München? W-questions keep the question word first, then the verb: Wo wohnen Sie? Mixing those two is an A1 leak that still appears at B1.

Strategy mistakes

Spending six minutes on one Hören item. Leaving Schreiben bullets unanswered because the introduction got too long. Saying yes in Sprechen and then freezing instead of asking a question back.

If you are stuck, produce a shorter clean sentence and move. Partial credit exists. Blank space does not.

A repair list, not a shame list

Pick one recurring error for a week. Only one. Word order *or* a false-friend pair *or* Perfekt with sein. The exam is a performance. Perform the pattern until it is boring, then pick the next leak.
