Konjunktiv II for polite, everyday German

würde, hätte, wäre, könnte — the forms you need for wishes, hypotheticals, and requests that do not sound like orders.

This is not a fantasy tense you can skip

At B1, Konjunktiv II is how you are polite and how you talk about unreal situations. Könnten Sie mir helfen? Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen. You can survive a bakery without it. You cannot sound like a cooperative adult in an oral exam without some of it.

The forms that pull most of the weight

würde + infinitive covers most verbs: Ich würde das nehmen. Keep wäre, hätte, könnte, sollte, müsste as their own words; they are common enough to learn as chunks. Wenn ich reich wäre … still uses wäre, not würde sein, in careful German — though you will hear würde sein in speech.

Politeness vs unreality

Same grammar, two jobs. Request: Ich hätte gern einen Termin. Hypothesis: Wenn das Wetter besser wäre, würden wir wandern. Learners sometimes treat every würde as fiction and then cannot ask for a form at the Bürgeramt.

A small, honest practice set

Write five polite requests you might need (help, a later appointment, a repetition). Write five wenn-clauses about time, money, or language. Say them. If hätte and würde swap places at random, drill those two until they stop competing.
